How to Tell Time
When it comes to telling time in Mexico or any other Spanish speaking country, all the numbers work just the same, but we talk about them differently. In the United States one might say "It's twelve pm" or "The time is two thirty". Let's look at a few sentences:
- Son las doce. It's twelve o'clock.
- Es la una. It's one o'clock.
- Es la una y media. It's one thirty.
- Son las quatro y cuarto. It's four fifteen.
- Son las seis menos cuarto. It's five forty five.
All times are considered plural, unless the time is between one and two, in which case it is singular. Use "y media" to say "and a half" and "y cuarto" to say "and a quarter". It is common to use "menos" after the half hour, meaning the hour, less these minutes, such as "Son las ocho menos diez. It's seven fifty."
That concludes this brief introduction to the Spanish language. Thanks for visiting and ¡Que tengas suerte! (Good luck!)
